We offer a highly experienced team of health impact assessment practitioners. We take a social determinants approach to the proposals we're assessing, adding significant value for the client. We have worked with many diverse clients in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific.

Our clients have this to say about our health impact assessment and whānau ora HIA work:

"We contracted Quigley and Watts to advise us in developing our 'Health in All Policies' programme. Their practical advice about how to action the programme and deliver staff training was particularly useful. Their experience, knowledge and hands-on assistance complemented our own skill set resulting in our programme going from strength to strength"
- Director of Public Health, Government of South Australia

"I would definitely work alongside Quigley and Watts again on future projects. The Quigley and Watts team ensured I made it through my first HIA. I gained invaluable skills in project management, research, reporting and stakeholder engagement"
- Project Manager, Wairarapa Public Health

Graffiti Vandalism Strategy Health Impact Assessment

Who forHastings District Council and Hawke's Bay District Health Board
WhyThe draft Strategy was developed to provide a coordinated approach to graffiti reduction. The Strategy built on existing operations and activities as well as recommending new initiatives. The health impact assessment provided recommendations on how to improve the draft strategy to achieve council outcomes and wellbeing outcomes.
WhatWe conducted focus groups with 'taggers', police and community members. We undertook a bespoke literature review on what works to prevent graffiti and we analysed existing policies at the national and local level. Analysis of this information outlined the potential positive and negative impacts of the draft proposal. Recommendations to promote positive aspects and reduce negative aspects were presented to the Hasting District Council.
OutcomesThe majority of recommendations made were accepted by the Council, and the new Graffiti Vandalism Strategy was adopted by Council with the changes made.

Wairoa District Council Waste Minimisation Plan Health Impact Assessment

Who forWairoa District Council and Hawke's Bay District Health Board
WhyDespite substantial effort from Wairoa District Council, there were problems with management of waste in the District. The draft Waste Management Plan was developed to provide options to create a more coordinated approach to waste management. A health impact assessment was carried out to assessed potential positive and negative outcomes and to make recommendations for change to the draft Plan
WhatUsing a participatory process, community workshops in Wairoa drew out excellent information about the Plan and suggested a new way forward for the Council. A literature review backed up the community's suggestion for taking Waste Management forward, and recommendations for a new approach (not already in the draft Plan) were made. This health impact assessment had a strong whānau ora approach.
OutcomesThe Council, as partners in the process, also contributed to the new solution and accepted all of the recommendations from the health impact assessment. A new Waste Management Plan that presents a community-Council solution (with funding attached) has been adopted by Council.
